When Michelle Marks saw her killer outside of Brooklyn Bridge Park, she was on the phone with her boyfriend.
“He’s here and he has a gun!” she screamed. “Call 911!”
That’s when her phone suddenly went dead. A few moments later, so was she, police said.
Cops are now looking for Marks’ killer — a former boyfriend identified by police sources as Lamont Wright — who pumped a bullet into the 23-year-old woman’s head near the park on Joralemon St. near Furman St. about 9:30 p.m. Monday.
“He thinks he’s going to get away with this — he can run but he can’t hide,” Marks’ heartbroken mom Pauline Marks said of Wright Tuesday. “He may have gotten away last night, but he’s not gonna get away from God.”
Marks left her job as a cashier at Fornino Pizza at Pier 6 in the famed waterfront park about 9 p.m. Monday.
“She was working and feeling really good about herself,” her mother said. “She was making money and buying herself things. Her goal was to go to California. She had purpose… She had a plan.”
By 9:30 p.m., the young woman was on the phone with her boyfriend as Wright tailed her.
“I just want to talk to you,” he was heard saying before the shooting.
Cops were trying to track down Wright Tuesday.
Marks’ current boyfriend texted Marks’ mom.
“Sam texted me, ‘Mom the guy is at her job with a gun,’” Pauline Marks said. “He called the police. People threaten with guns all the time, I didn’t expect it to go that far, didn’t expect him to use it.”
Marks’ new boyfriend is taking her death very hard, she said.
“By the time Sam got there the ambulances were taking her away,” she said. “He’s really disturbed by it.”
Marks had filed at least three harassment reports against Wright — and was was planning to file an order of protection against him on Tuesday, her mother said.
“I’m just trying to process and come to terms with what happened,” Pauline Marks said. “She had a day off from work today, and was supposed to get an order of protection.”
Marks had an on-again, off-again romance with Wright, who was abusive, her mother said.
“I just met him Sunday for the first time,” Pauline Marks said. “I heard Michelle yell ‘Mom!’ from outside, and I opened the door and saw she had fallen against the wall. He had hit her. She came inside and he just stood there. I asked him why he hit my daughter. And he just stood there and looked at me like ‘I’m gonna hit you.’”
“It was like he was in another world,” she said. “Like the elevator didn’t hit the top. I don’t know if it was drugs or what, but something was wrong. He didn’t run or anything. Just stood there staring. No remorse… no smile… nothing.”
Several people heard a gunshot but cops have found no witnesses to her killing, a police source said.
“We’re fanning out from the scene, questioning everyone we can,” the source said.
As cops look for Wright, Pauline Marks has a bigger challenge — consoling her mentally disabled daughter Tamika, Michelle’s older sister.
“She didn’t really understand when I told her what happened,” Pauline Marks said. “I don’t know how she’s going to react when she does understand.”
